hello all new to the forum i am, i have an 83 528e which sat outside last winter. On a morning when the temp was extremely low, the oil seemingly froze. When starting the car i thought i could hear the crank slapping the frozen oil. Since that time the oil light flickers heavily when the car is fully warmed up and idling. Then goes away when revs reach 1000 or so. Having now recieved my new oil pump i am looking for info on removal and installation of the new pump. My main concern is will the oilpan clear the space between the crossmember and the bottom of the crankshaft after that all should be smooth. thanks to all who reply

You are lucky that you have a 528e, because the oil pan will clear. What you need to do is remove the oil pan. Then there are 3 10 mm that are on the oil pump that you need to remove. The biggest problem is that you do not have enough clearance to remove the oil pan until you remove the pump. The same goes for when you put the new pump on.

Make sure that you get a new oil pan seal and I believe the lbs/ft on the oil pan bolts is 7. Good luck. I did this, but I ended up having to go back in and replace the bearings. If you have more then 220,000 milers on the car it might also be the bearings. By the way did you ever do a oil pressure test?

Andy
