1990 325i 5 speed
I removed my my bypass valve boot,( the big rubber elbow)
Inside I found lots of oil along with seriously oil fouled plugs.I blame the serious fouling on this excess of oil in the intake. Let me say I am in no rush to take the head off.
Could this have been cause by my valve seal gaskets?
I've never seen this before, how about anyone else.[img]

Oil in that boot is common... oil fouled plugs are another issue I think...

Is oil in that boot ok? I also have oil in that boot and I have also found oil in the air box... what is it all coming from? How can you fix it? I don't mean to hijack this thread but I think that the oil in this boot is affecting my MAF so I would like to know where it is coming from.

I don't know exactly, but I know I've read it up here. It comes from the valve cover breather hose at the top back of the valve cover.

I've read that as well... so I replaced that exact hose with a brand new one and I still get oil there. I guess some oil will always end up there via the hose?

Oil in the intake on a higher mileage M20 engine is quite common. The cause of oil being there will be worn valve seals, blowby past the rings, or a combination of those. A compression and leak down test will tell if the rings are a major contributor.

For what it's worth, I did notice a decrease in "oil" film in the maf and air duct after a cyl head rebuild at 185k. The valve seals were redone.

i did find a fault with the valve cover gasket, metal spacer was interfering with the cover seating properly, took the metal spacer out. tight cover gasket no leaks.
on my other 325i when i remove the oil filer cap the engine speed decreases, not with this new old 1990 325i manual trans. it seems there is an air leak.

all new rubber, good seal on valve cover, no responce from injectors when sprayed with ether, same for intake manifold.

no smoke, and it passed inspection. i will do a compression test.[img]

Checked the hose from the valve cover that goes to the intake, as 325e suggested? Is gasket under oil add cover good? You might even try covering add oil cover area with a plastic bag on a gloved hand (engine running... heads up... messy) to see if change in performance... there should be, I would think. Or, make a temporary gasket for it.

Tried pulling out dipstick with engine running? There's an o ring on there, as well. If it's pulled with engine running, it should change performance.

Metal spacer? What is that about?

Does sound like an air leak.

THE SPACER WAS UP FRONT NEAR THE CAM SHAFT SEALS, IN BETWEEN THE 2 ROCKER SHAFTS. iT SHOULD REST CLEANLY BETWEEN THE 2 SHAFTS IN THIS CASE IT HAD WORKED LOOSE AND WAS PREVENTING THE VLAVE COVER FROM CLOSING COMPLETELY. SO I TOOK IT OUT

the idle control valve is receiving differencial voltages with the throttle position switch closed, voltage on the one side is 9 to 10 volts the other is half that causing the crontrol valve to remain closed. creating enough back pressure to suck oil out of the engine case. Why does this happen?

Hey Smithpatrick, that "spacer" actually stops the rocker shafts from rotating. it those shafts are allowed to rotate you will starve your rockers of oil and they will seize... Shocked
I would really suggest you go back and clean it all out and reseat that "spacer" tap it in with a hammer if need be, it sits on a taper from memory... but is VERY necessary.
