Looking for some direction/validation/affiliation/etc. on this one. I have a 2000 Z3 automatic transmission with 56K miles on it. The problem is during acceleration as the transmission shifts from 2nd to 3rd the gears will disengage. Reengaging occurs either through manually downshifting to a lower gear, or allowing the revs to drop far enough that the transmission reengages itself. In any case, reengagement is accompanied by a loud clank and jerking motion. This happens about 5% of the time (more when my wife drives the car. Not saying... I'm just saying...). According to the dealership (not where I bought the car), they suggest a new transmission ($5,300 installed) b/c "BMW doesn't repair transmissions, we replace them." So my question(s): Has anyone else experienced this same situation or heard of this situation? Can BMW transmissions be worked on with reasonable success? Is a new tranny really necessary? Any help will be greatly appreciated!!
