I noticed a vibration from my shift lever (5 speed manual) and while trouble shooting it I noticed that the lever can be lifted an inch or so. Could a retaining clip/ring come loose and cause this? It still shifts but getting it in to reverse is a challenge.

Thanks....Bob

yes.
could be the plastic retainer.
you have to look and find out what is causing this, and post back

if you do want to tackle this, its a good time to upgrade to the z3 shifter, and i suggest to replace as much as possible while your in there.

the most difficult part for me wasn't the bitchclip, but the knuckle that goes into the tran (end of selector rod). pita.

i also replaced the seals from my trany when i did the clutch (so much easier when the whole thing is out).

better to fix it now than be stuck later

Pull the boot cover up, and see what is moving when you pull the shift knob up.

Is it the plastic bearing cup the shift lever sits in?
Or the entire arm that the plastic bearing cup seats into?

If the bearing is moving, you can push it down and twist to lock in place.
If the whole arm, look underneath the car to see that mounting part is missing. There is a rear mount with a rubber bushing that attaches to the underbody up at the top of the tunnel, if that is missing or disconnected, or broken, the lever will move way too much.

Dale you were right, it was the rear mount. I just need to order the part and I am good to go.

Thanks.......Bob

If you want to go with a short throw shifter B&M makes one that is great. It is billet aluminum. it took a while to get used too, but short shifts are now amazing and the shifter feels so much tighter.
