One way to do this is to get the ellipsoidal headlights from a 1988 or 1989 model, and upgrade the bulbs to xenon.
Wow, $250 per side for these new, that's a very expensive way to go.

Another way is to buy the Hella 5-3/4 H4/H1 replacement headlights and upgrade the bulbs in those.

About $50 for each headlight, $200 total, and better light output then the factory ellipsoidal's.

I just ordered a set of Hella's and a set of Superwhite 80/100w bulbs.
We'll see how these work out, I may upgrade to xenon in these...

I'm starting with just the low beams as that's what I use 95% of the time.
If I just used the normal 55/60w bulbs, this would only cost about $110, a very nice upgrade for the money.

I have the stock '88 ellipsoids in my cabrio, and while they're not as bright as the modern, obnoxiously bright headlights, they are SOOOOOO much better than the stock headlights in my E36M3, which $uck! I'm going to upgrade the E36 lights eventually, but my E30 lights are fine the way they are.

Dale, I had the hella's in my old 87 and the only down fall that I could see was they were so bright that when your lights reflected off of a road sign it would almost blind you. Maybe that's why the upgraded bulbs say off road use only. I did run them for 5 years with no trouble, not even with the cops. Just make sure you dim your lights fast as the highs sure could blind an on coming car as I got high beamed quite a few times until I got really fast with the dimmer switch. I had the 100 watt in the highs and 80/100 in the lows. I do remember I had to go with a bigger fuse as they would blow the stock ones. Never did give me any trouble after that. I don't think xenon are any brighter but I could be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time.
