Turn the key all the way, 90 deg from vertical. There is some resistance, but there is a mechanical link between the key and the lcok, so you will be able to unlock the driver's door mechanically.

Go to the passenger side, lift up the handle, while turmning the key 45 degrees clockwise. if it opens you will have to synchronize the locks. I forgot how to do that.

Can't you use the key in the lock of the trunk? Turn it through 90 deg and then push the button (or am I thinking of another model?).

It's been a while since I had an E34

that works also, but sometimes it didn't.
Some guys mentioned opening the trunk, and going thru the ski luggage bag with a long tool to pop the lock button on the door.
