Central locking stopped working altogether on my '94 318ic. I finally took the car in to have it diagnosed, and the mechanic says its a faulty General Module.

He says I have the get one from the dealer ($350) and then have it coded to my car ($150) and then he can install it for an hours worth of labor.

My question, is this something that I can buy on ebay or from a local junk tyard and just plug in myself. Or, do I really need a new one from the dealer and have it encoded for this feature to work again?
THanks,
JH

I am not absolutly sure but I don't think the central locking module is unique to the particular car. I think the $150 "coding fee" is bogus although the one hour labor sounds about right.

You might check the wiring harness going to the trunk lid on the driver's side. If it hasn't failed yet it probably will soon.
