Hi:
My 528IT has been making intermittently a noise right at the center of the tunnel, just behind the front seats. It sounds similar to a bad tensioner bearing, and the frequency is tied to the car speed. I would assume this is the center bearing if it weren't for a puzzling detail: the noise goes off and on. My experience is that when a bearing goes, it goes, but this is strange. Any ideas? Could it be the output bearing of the tranny (165k on it)?

Also, can you tell me a reasonable rate for the center bearing replacing, on a E39 wagon?

Thanks for your help.

Might be flaccid exhaust system rubber hangars. Get under there and shake the exhaust, and also the driveshaft. The latter should have no up-and-down play at the center bearing.

Well, it was the drive shaft. The rear CV joint (that connects to the diff) was the culprit of the vibration, that ended up ruining the center bearing too. I got the transmission fluid changed also. Runs very smooth now.
