Hi:
My 528IT has been making intermittently a noise right at the center of the tunnel, just behind the front seats. It sounds similar to a bad tensioner bearing, and the frequency is tied to the car speed. I would assume this is the center bearing if it weren't for a puzzling detail: the noise goes off and on. My experience is that when a bearing goes, it goes, but this is strange. Any ideas? Could it be the output bearing of the tranny (165k on it)?
Also, can you tell me a reasonable rate for the center bearing replacing, on a E39 wagon?
Thanks for your help. _________________

Might be flaccid exhaust system rubber hangars. Get under there and shake the exhaust, and also the driveshaft. The latter should have no up-and-down play at the center bearing. _________________

Well, it was the drive shaft. The rear CV joint (that connects to the diff) was the culprit of the vibration, that ended up ruining the center bearing too. I got the transmission fluid changed also. Runs very smooth now. _________________
