|
|
Upstairs in our house, we have 3 closets, 2 in the West bedroom, 1 in the East bedroom. They have always been hard to get the best use from as they are fairly shallow.
I noticed a while ago, that there are dead spaces behind the closet walls. Last summer I had a structural engineer crawl through those spaces with me and give me his suggestions on what was needed to tear down that back closet wall and expand the closet another 4' deep to the edge of the house.
Last week I started that work.
All the pictures are here:

East bedroom closet
1) before starting MJ and I cleaned all the stuff out of the closets
2) next step, tear down the walls! (pink floyd?)
3) clean up the mess
4) add hurricane tie downs, the rafters were only toe-nailed when the second story of the house was built in 1994
5) add full blocking to the rafters with a covered vent to keep the critters out, it only had partial blocking earlier
6) nail knee wall base to floor
7) time for drywall, Scotty did most of this part
first coat of mud
next let it dry, sand,
another coat of mud, let it dry, sand,
final coat of mud, let it dry, sand,
primer, paint,
cut and install plywood floor, stain floor
install trim along base of the wall
done!
Next comes the shelving and racks and maybe another light. _________________ http://www.unofficialbmw.com

All drywall and painting is done.
I've installed cabinets and shelves and hanging space using an Ikea system in a birch wood. I think it looks great, I'll have pictures up soon.
While we were redoing stuff, we also changed out a couple of cabinets in the kitchen.
We removed a built-in desk and upper cabinet (they are being installed in the garage on Thursday),
and installed 2 80" tall cabinets for a pantry. It should double or more our pantry space,
and it really opens up the kitchen.

Dale, You are either hyperactive, or you have too much time on your hands!
Seriously, looks like a good job. Do you have any Before pics?
Those roof rafters are impressive. Are they mostly that deep for insulation? _________________
