Do some tire tread configurations require the tread to be faceing in a particular direction?

It depends utterly on the tire. Some do, some don't. Some, like the Azenis I'm so fond of, have an inside and an outside, and a tread pattern that looks like it should be directional, but isn't.

A directional tire will have an arrow indicating the correct direction of rotation.

Most performance tires are directional. They have arrow shaped grooves in the tread design which forces water out from the the center of the tire. If they were mounted backwards they'd be pulling water in and would hydroplane extremely easily.
