replaced the motor (in the firewall)
pulled the resistor, but don't have a spare.
pulled the dash and switch, and its missing a wire to a prong (as seen in the pix)


what wire goes to this prong ?



and
as far as i could test, none of the wires on the switch have any power to them.

the number 20 fuse was replaced with a (appears to be good) green fuse).

any help is appreciated

Dan:

Here's what I found in the electrical diagrams for the following cars:

325i:

5 wires - GN/BR, YL, BK, GN, BU (Green/Brown, Yellow, Black, Green, Blue)

In your pic, I see the Green/Brown, Yellow, Black and Blue... No Green...

In the wiring diagram, the green seems to be from the 3rd fan speed and goes to the resistor.

The Blue is Full Speed for the fan...

ok.
i will look for a green wire.
but
there isn't any power to any of the wires (afaik) with my small tester.

im going to check the k7 tomorrow when i get home.

its a 1984 323 2dr

i think the wiring (or wire) was just ripped out and used for the stereo or something.
i will look closer at it later, as i just got done swapping out new front struts, top mounts... and i think thats enough for one day

i wonder, if you could just tell me what that plug or open prong needs...
does it need 12v. or a ground, or is it a signal to another thing ?

also,
i found 2 more relays in the dash, that appear OEM (just 30yo now) and wonder if they have anything to do with it.

i did swap out the l7 relay with another spare, but don't know if the spare was good, so really, i just need a bunch of spares or figure out a way to check relays.

The wiring I gave you was for a 325i...

I don't know if I have a wiring diagram for a 323. What's an '84 323? Is that a euro version that was brought over? I don't think I have a wiring diagram for it... can you please email me the vin???

these little guys live inside the dash, center console as low as they can go.
anyone id them for me ? what do they do, or serve ?





they live in those black boxes at the center.

Can't find those relays in the ETK, but I know I've seen them before when I bought a box of parts...

When I choose the vehicle, I'm choosing a 1984 323i... that's the only choice my ETK is giving me...

cool...
all i know is they are 5 prong, and i've personally never seen a 'bad' relay until recently on a friends e30.

also.
that one prong is more of a concern, and the fact that none of the wires to the back of the switch have any power...or at least didn't register any 12v on my tester.

i have yet to get a good resistor, so when i do, i wll pop that in..but it should still work at the high *(4) setting, which it doesn't work at all, or on any setting, so im ruling that out until i test it with a known good one.

im also wondering how hard it would be to just re-wire it...

what does that one prong need, (green you say ? )... is that 12v ?

You know Dan... Pelican sells the blower resistor for $29.50. You're right though.. even if the resistor is fried, #4 should work. Those wires, as far as I can tell, go directly from the switch on the console to the resistor and fan contacts.

I think it would be pretty much of a pain-in-the-ass to rewire it... that resistor slips into that socket underneath the blower carrier... Lots to remove I think...

With all of the work you do on these puppies, I think you should get yourself the ETK disks... sometimes you get the complete set with the wiring diagrams, trouble shooter cds and the time estimator cd.

.. so, i think its either the switch, or the power to the switch.
the motor works when i connected it straight to 12v.
