325ic plastic strip loose .... how to fix it?

just above the rocker panel, below the lip of the footwell on the drivers side is a long plastic cover strip attached with clips.
these clips are loose and i need to reattach that strip correctly

whats the trick to do this?
i am sure i will have to get new clips

Hi Fred...

You have to take off the strip, and then check out the clips. If they are the ones I'm thinking of, they have an expansion insert, and then a pin that gets driven through the middle of that, expanding the back of the clip. You can try pushing those pins in a bit, while you're also holding the clip against the car body. If you push too far, the pin goes through and the clip falls out.

my q was: how do you i finagle them off? screwdriver, plier brute force?
i know i will probably need a bunch of clips from bavauto

i still get stomach burns when i hear that rumble ...the more i listen: its from the driveshaft, more so when the engine drives...

still wonder what the symptoms of a sloppy guibo are. kind of yanking on the clutch when nearly torqued?

Fred... I'm confused about what you're asking.

If you're asking how to get the trim off, I believe you snap it off the clips. It's probably anchored with bolts at the ends.

To remove the clips, tap that center pin all the way in and the clip should become loose and you can just pull it out.

I haven't seen that specific trim, but I did look at the diagram below, and the clips are #5. They have a center pin that you drive in and once that's through, the tension is released.

i have to get under there and see where the ends are.
the problem is they are actually out of the middle clips, and i step on the strip getting out....annoying!
i just dont want to break them when taking them off.

i read that wub-wub-wub article on the faq pages and will try wd40 on the central bearing of the driveshaft....maybe theres the rub?

otoh: my frontwheel bearing replacements were an absolute dog to do. plus you just dont get the bearings alone anymore, you get a whole assembly for mucho dollars! or was i hoodwinked?

OK, so I have no idea what your talking about then.
If it exists on the car it should be listed in realoem.com.
But in my vert #5 is the only part covering the rocker sill. It runs from the Door jamb to the rear where the seat belt attaches. It's one piece and the clips are removed by pulling the center part out and releasing them.
I've had it off numerous times and was able to reuse the clips every time

He's talking about an external piece of trim, not one inside the car. I don't have it as I have a coupe.

There is a body side molding that runs the length just at the base of the sill.
If that's it, then the clips will break trying to remove it.

popped off that strip (after i ordered 4 clips from bavauto.com) with a spatula. nothing to it. the front end of the strip has a plug. so it cannot be difficult to reinstall.

steelbrushing the thing, i immediately noticed: AHA, it's not the clips, it's the strip that's broken: in three areas above the well, sure due to standing on it, the strips upper lip at three clip locations was broken, ripped off, no wonder the strip could not hold on.

new strip: 120 bux from bavauto....uh oh.

so i took the clips out with a screw driver, incl the grommets. One flew into the nature the other came out, the third broke off...whew.
then i drilled three new 1/4in holes into the rocker panel, 3in off the original place, inserted the new clips with the old grommets and snapped the strip back on , first pushing it on from below and then with a gentle tap from above....click....voila.

get four or five clips, not worth trying to save old ones...

cost me 15 bux plus 1hr

arent the e30's a carbuffs delight?
