So, while looking at possible causes for my chugging, stalling engine issue, the O2 sensor was mentioned. There are many types that vary in price greatly.

Does anyone know if my 84 325e uses the heated four-wire type? Or can it get by with a 3-wire model?

325e uses a 3wire type. Here is a post of mine with lots of info on using less expensive Bosch O2 sensors compared to the BMW sensor.

By the way, I've seen a lot of pictures of the connector up by the firewall with a big twist on AMP or similar. Mine shows up in that location, but it's just a small pull apart connector that sits in a clip on the "tray". I had forgotten about it, but I remember Dinan telling me what it was years ago and that they'd disconnected it for some reason, I don't remember why, and it was supposed to only be temporary. But, as I'm good at, I forgot about it and drove around for months with it disconnected without any problems.

It is definitely a 3-wire in a D-shell connector.
