Good. I think those nylon gears break when the seat is reclined back all the way against the rear seat. The motor keeps turning and the seat cannot keep reclining, so the weakest link breaks which happens to be that little gear. Glad you got it fixed.

well, the gear just came in today, $40 for that little plastic thing.
what I fixed last week was the broken Bowden cable, so now I can use the lever to release the seat back.
hopefully in a couple of hours I will have the new gear in, and will be able to adjust the seat back electronically !!
this has been broken for maybe 5 years, can't wait to have this fixed !!
thanks for your help whitdog _________________ joe

Folks
I finally repaired the dang reclining seat problem.
YES, Whitdog's instruction is great.
I ran into a lot of problems while trying to take the seat apart. my Torx wrench couldn't fit probably and struggled to extract the screws.
Also, due to all the grease within the cavity of the gear box, I did not see that broken bits were imbedded. When I installed the replacement gear, it didn't go in smooth and subsequently broke. Had to order another gear.
Things to look out for
1) Need to have the proper length Torx drivers to remove the Torx screws.
2) Make sure no broken bits stuck within the grease. Will clog the replacement gear and render the replacement useless.
3) Make sure the seat is completely unbolted (front and rear) before unplugging the battery
I hope you gear repair is a lot smoother than mine.
Good luck _________________ '03 X5 3.0
