Popped it off and there is a rubber dome underneath that doesn't want to come off. Should I keep tugging & maybe check to see if whatever underneath is on tight?

No doubt I need a ramp, my right arm is killing me from sliding under the car and reaching up to the shock mount. I pulled the plastic cover over the shocks down and sprayed WD40. Sprayed the inside of that dome as well and the two screws on either side.

Just talked to the guy at Sports & Imports and he says the same thing as you!! He says the rubber just deteriorates. He replaces them with a heavy duty mount so it doesn't happen again. I am going to drop it off this week. I'll keep you posted! Thank you for ALL your help!

This thread post just helped me to remember two things:

1. It's a small world, and us Bimmer lovers are a rare happy bread
2. My shock mounts probably need to be replaced. Doh!

totally agree.

I'm a member of forums for my other cars, and there are some jerks there. there has never been a flame war, or anything like that here.

Cyndi, glad to hear you are on your way to silent motoring !! Let us know how it turns out.

Update: I dropped my car off and Gary at Sports & Imports put it on the lift. It was NOT the shock mounts, as he could tell they were replaced already (about 3 years ago when I had the shocks replaced) BUT he says whoever installed the shocks put this coupling thing in backwards. He fixed it, drove it around and heard NOTHING. I will let you all know the real deal after I drive it!!

coupling thing? I wonder what it is? and if it's my problem? I can't imagine what he is talking about. Can you describe the sound any better? My sound is like a crunching sound.

Gary knows his BMW's for sure. The dealer would have replaced your shocks, shock mounts, and 3 other things, for a cost of $800 !!!

It's Fixed!! He said the coupling on the end of the shock was put in backwards. Whatever it was, all he had to do was take a look and see that the shock was on wrong. I am so happy I went to him! Less than $100.00!! I ran down in the morning and he even gave me a POS loaner to drive back home. My poor daughter got in that thing at the end of the day and totally freaked out... it was an old Nissan Altima, she is in 8th grade. She ducked on the way through the center of Northford! However, I cannot believe how nice it finally is to drive my car !! The sound was definitely metal on metal, not crunching.

You are so right about the dealer!! They are scam artists. Acura told my friend that she needed something that would cost over $1,000. and it would NOT pass inspection. Guess what? It passed inspection 6 months later!

You have helped me tremendously Joe, thanks sooo much!

Cindi... Don't be a stranger! Glad it's fixed. You should stick around... you'll discover tons about your car up here.

Love it that your daughter hid in the Nissan lol!

Also, if I were you, I'd stay away from the people that put the shock in wrong in the first place!
