Great! Thanks for the feedback.

I, too, have heard good things about these folks. Hope they stay in business long enough for me to get mine fixed, when it needs it.

Hi guys,

I just registered.
You guys seem to know a lot about this abs issue.
I read thru this thread and my friends sensors read 6k ohms on three sensors and 3.18k for one.

I haven't removed the controller yet, but is ther any thoughts on this?

Its a 2000 528

Thanks in advance,

Criss

Replace the odd sensor to see what happens.

I have some of the same problems described here but a little different. I have a 1997 528i. My ASC light and ABS light are both on. I do not have any other problems as far as controls go, but I now have to manually shift from S1 all the way to drive and sometimes S3 doesn't shift to drive so I have to shift back to S3 then Drive to get to normal drive. My tranny light isn't on. Occasionally it will come on if my shift pattern isn't perfect. Any ideas?

My 1998 528i has very similar problems. In my case, the the ABS light comes ON, the radio cuts off, and the cruise control cuts off. The problem fixes itself within a day or two. The dealer has no explaination.

One thing I noted that this happens inevitabily on wet days! Call it a coincidence, but I suspect high moisture in the air is somehow connected.

The dealer have that responsibility to fix the problem.

How does the maintenance differ on a BMW than on a Ford or GM? I want to buy a 1997 BMW 318i but I am a home mechanic and have no trouble working on my Ford's or GM's. I am wondering what the difference is and if i could work on my own BMW. I don't want to do any major motor work just the basics. Example: Starter, Oil changes, Alternator, Tune up. What are some of the differences or obsticals i can come to expect. Is it an easy transition?

Not much difference. Designs are different, but if you are a confident shade-tree mechanic, you'll have no worries.

Get the Bentley Service Manual for your model, and you'll be good to go. You should also log onto the E36 forum for more specific info and help.

I have a 1997 528i and my ABS traction control and brake lights all came on. When this happened I had to start shifting the transmission manually in order to go anywhere. I drove like this for over a year. I tried everything that was suggested here. Last week I fixed the problem and the lights are all off and the car now shifts itself. Here is what it was. In the front drivers strut tower (it is actually in the wheel well there is a rectangular box and there are wires that run to the wheel. The sensor has a red wire and a yellow wire. Both of those wires were broken. So I stripped them back as much as I could and soldered them back together. Then put it back together and it fixed the problem! I hope this info helps out. It was an easy fix. I am looking for that sensor if anyone has one or knows where to find one. My wires were broken right at the sensor so this won't stay fixed for long. Thanks.

Sounds like the wires were for the wheel speed sensor.

I have a 1997 528i with the abs asc and brake lights on. I also had to shift manually. After a whole lot of research and trial and error I found out it is a sensor in the drivers front wheel well. The wires had broken thus After replacing the sensor that I got at BAP for $120.00, lights are off and car shifts on its own! Maybe this will help.
