Many have asked where to get duplicate keys. The only answer is “The Dealer”. Each key, even the plastic emergency key, has an RFID chip embedded in it. The antenna around the ignition key slot interrogates the key, and, if it gets the matching code programmed into the EWS (electronic driveaway protection) module, the engine can be started.

The RFID chip is the very same device that is used to “tag” your pet.

BMW does not allow third-parties or professional locksmiths access to key coding instructions or equipment, unlike many other manufacturers. See autotransponder.com, or remotesandkeys.com.

The new key must still be “mated” to the car, as noted in your Owner’s Manual, to enable the remote entry function.
