Does anyone know whether the e39 540i front brake calipers and rotors would fit the E34 cars?

Not sure. The E39 540 brakes are the same as the E38 740. Best way to check is to determine if the pads are all the same. The E34 540 brakes may be the same.

One problem is the wheel: will the caliper fit inside?

I know for sure that e34 540/M5 brakes are bigger at REAR vs E39 540

just a few mm
