This company has developed new seals for the VANOS pistons. Those who have replaced them have been very surprised at the increased performance:

BTW, I have no financial connection with them.

Funny though, they mention failure after 20k miles (32k km). My M50TU has 334k km and I don't experience the problems they mention...

Is this marketing stuff or actual facts?

I'm just curious here as my Vans is noisy but I never felt it would fail. I read many times that the Vanos of my generation is noisy. Even the dealer (who'd be happy to charge me a swap) told me it was not a problem.

I think the wording as you say is a sales pitch, quote ' have been found to ....'

but I suppose if you changed you would notice an improvement, if its worth the investment is another story.....???

I also heard the e36 vanos is noisy

Cheers Martin Smile

People on the E39 board on roadfly report significant improvement in low-to-mid range performance after replacing the seals.

Perhaps the degradation, and improvement, is more apparent in the heavier 5 series car, as opposed to a 3-series car.

Last December, bought my wife (finally got her out of them damn VW's) a 2003 325ci Sport Coupe. The double vanos is a little noisey when cold, but seems to run fine and gets over 30 mpg on CA gas.
I wonder how soon I will have to start wrenching on it for the seals to be replaced? (49,000 miles on it so far...)...
I like my 1.9L OHC 318ti motor. Chain driven cams (never have to replace belts like my old 325's), hauls ass, and does'nt use any oil (now I fixed all the usual leaks).
