I'm going to change the oil for someone this weekend that has an 2002 E46 325xi. We are in New England, and it is just the start of real winter, if that make a difference. He has the owners manual, not me.

Should I go to the dealer and get BMW synthetic oil, or can I use other synthetics? I plan to use an original BMW filter. Also what is the total capacity?
