I have a 1986 BMW L7. I bought it 2 years ago and love the car, but it has it's share of problems. I have replaced some minor parts, alternator, water pump, I replaced the fan with an electric one. The car is going on 300K and I'm not complaining in the least, it's 23 years old. Recently, the car was sputtering and eventually dying when it was on the road after 10-15 minutes of running. I would pull over, give it 30 seconds and it would be fine. Sometimes it wouldn't happen for a couple of days then it would sputter again. Sometimes it died sometimes it didn't. Last week it died and would start back up, drive for 20 yards and die again, start up and die again. I could floor it, and it would try to come back, but it always ended up dying. Now it starts and won't idle for more than 5 min before it dies. I have changed the fuel filter and recently the relay box under the dash near the hood release fell from its mount. I mounted it back up, but it didn't help. As far as I can see the wiring to the relay is still intact. Anyone have any suggestions? I have been told it could be the oxygen sensor or the computer has gone bad. Any hep would be appreciated.

You need to measure fuel pressure. This sounds like a failing fuel pump, or a badly clogged fuel filter, or even a bad fuel pressure regulator.

edjack-

Thanks for the advice. I've replaced the fuel filter and the regulator. Thought I had the problem taken care of, but after 30 min of idling and a couple of laps around the block, it started happening again. I guess the next step is the fuel pump. Back to the drawing board.
