Got the car on the track today.

With a ton of help from Wazzu today and other folks, we finished the last bits needed on the car to get it ready for the track.

Did 1 lap on the track today, but we had an issue with the tire rubbing the strut. Got that fixed and the car is ready for tomorrow.

I'll post more tomorrow after we get back to Seattle.

Dale

I'm back home in Seattle, car ran great all Sunday.
It's 100 pounds overweight, down 10hp vs the other Pro3 cars, and riding 1" too high due to poor choice on my part on a suspension purchase.

New parts already ordered to fix the ride height, parts are in the garage to fix the HP deficit, and it's going on a diet very soon.
Gotta get it ready for Seattle on May 10th/11th. (Pacific Raceways in Kent)

More pics and info tomorrow.

21 Pro3 cars started, I finished 9th.

Some things we discovered this weekend, the Vorschlag 75mm studs don't work with the rims I have, there is too much space between the threads going into the hub, and the threads for the nut.
Lucky for me I had some others as spares from the previous car, and Nick/Wazzu got them swapped over on the rear. I run spacers up front so this wasn't an issue and I run the Vorschlags up there.

When your Tach stops working, check Fuse 21 first!
We spent an hour tracing the black wire from the cluster to the DME, through C101 connector, etc. It was all good, the fuse was bad.

The stock exhaust on this car isn't half bad, I'm still running the stock exhaust manifolds, the full huge catalytic converter, and the stock muffler.
Quiet as a mouse compared to the race exhausts around me, I couldn't even hear my own car to shift-by-sound.

The guys at West Werks in Redmond were out all weekend with their newly built car. Great guys. If you need work done in the Seattle area, give them a try, they work on most import cars, not just BMWs:

Congrats Dale! Just wanted to give a public thanks for coming down and allowing me to do your cage. It was a pleasure to meet you and watch you run the car this weekend.

I know you will be up front soon with the car after you take the cat off and redo the exhaust plus strip another 100lbs of or so! Good luck in the future.

Russell: You did a beautiful job on that cage and I really like the recessed panel on the passenger side door to match the cage. Really nice.

Dale: Congrats! It's definitely a start and you did very well with that extra 100 pounds! Time for a diet though!!!

Keep it up!

Thanks guys. I'll be working on the car hard the next 2 weeks to get it ready for Seattle on May 10th/11th.

If you'd like to see pics of our race weekends taken by a pro photog, check out Curtis Creager's site, Curtis travels to all our races and takes tons of photos.

Little bit of tire lockup there, smoked the tires coming into that corner too hot. Gotta get the ABS system out of the car and the brake bias adjuster installed.

Nick is referring to my car riding a lot higher then our minimum allowed ride height. Some new camber plates will take care of that this week!

Next is HP, before the next race I likely will only get the exhaust upgraded to headers and a 3" system, should add another 5-10hp. I'll probably get a tune up in there as well, new spark plugs, cap and rotor should help, I think these have 60k miles on them. A valve adjustment is a good idea also.

Then, get the weight out, I want to pull around 80 pounds out of the car still.
Best bets are the ABS pump, the A/C condensor and evaporator, sound deadening on the front floor. Sound deadening under the hood on the firewall has to go as well. Fan has to come out, weight and HP-robber.

Last is setup, I need to do a corner-balance on the chassis, and spend some time on suspension setup for the track.

A bunch more pictures up on the page:
http://www.unofficialbmw.com/89_red_325i/

Got the new Ground Control camber mounts installed tonight, chopped up
the top of the strut mounts, yes, the sheet metal, and installed these babies.
So much more camber and caster range, love them already.

Pulled the exhaust the other day at West Werks, well ... Francis did the
hard work, I stood there and watched him.
Drove it into and out of the trailer with just the exhaust manifolds, LOUD!
Pulled the exhaust manifolds tonight and ...
Installed the headers! They look great....
but more importantly should help out with some more power.

Polished stainless steel, wonder how long they'll look this good?

New Vorschlag (tall) and Ground Control camber plates (short).
I pulled the Vorschlag off,and added the Ground Control plates,
The GC are about 1" shorter, which directly translates to a lower car,
a very good thing:

Pic of the car before the Portland weekend:

Tremendous amount of great pics Dale! Thanks!

Those camber plates look pretty interesting. I've got a rookie question about them though. What's the purpose of being able to adjust the camber like that? Does it give a more grippy ride at speed?

Thats the way to handle the exhaust manifolds....let someone else do it! My least favorite part of working on just about any car is the exhaust bits when they are all rusted together.

We add camber front and rear, typically 2degrees - 4degrees.
Stock is around 1 degree.

We measure tire temp across the face of the tire with a pyrometer,
if the outside of the tire is too hot, we add camber so the car rides
more squarely on the tire at the peak cornering point in the corner.
If the inside is too hot, we take out some camber.

Great explanation Dale.

This only applies to cornering?
