Hi

Just bought a 2002 320d, 66k miles and then have read that the turbo can just go and cause major damage with big costs...

Is this really true and common? If it is then is there anything that I can do that will prevent this happening ?

Thanks and great forum Razz

G

My missus is getting a 2002 320D as well. As soon as it gets in, I'm going to have a turbo timer installed. The timer leaves the engine running a few minutes after the ignition is turned off. This allows oil to circulate the turbo bearings and hopefully cool it down some before shutting down.

Hi G, to tell you the truth I haven't actually thought about brand or price. I was thinking of just bringing the car to the shop and getting the cheapest available installed. But now that you asked, I googled for turbo timers and e46 and did not see even one article on the combination. I wonder if the BMW ignition switch supports splicing in a turbo timer.
