Hello folks,

Normally a E30 guy but I am trying to help out a freind with a 99 528i.

Here is the problem:

First the ABS and Traction Control lights came on. Then the transmission makes a nice 'bang' sound and gets stuck in 3rd. A little gear light with a exclamation in the middle goes on and the speedo goes away and also the dash lights indicating gear selection also go away.

One shop told me it was the ignition switch, well for $60 I went ahead and got one. I fired it back up and and only the ABS and Traction Control light was on. I drove it and it shifted like a champ and the speedo worked and the little gear light was out. I called the shop and they said it probably just needed a reset and they could do that for me at no charge. So I start driving down there.

I get about 8 miles and then 'bang' the trans goes into third and stays there. I get home turn it off and back on and its good again for about 8 feet and then 'bang' again.

Now I am told it will need the ASC control unit under the hood replaced, recoded, etc. All of this should cost about $2,700!

Help?

Thanks,
