Tried to find this info in previous forums, but no luck. I have a getrag 260 pulled from a 86 325e.. is it a direct fit for my 89 325is? Trying to decide whether to keep as a spare or sell.. any info would be much appreciated.

Yup, direct fit. Only difference is that a 325i only needs one hole for a reference sensor, while the 325e needs two. You just will need to use one of the holes and leave the other open, or plug it up.

Thanks for the info.. here's hoping I don't have to use this spare anytime soon. Out of curiousity..I drove this donor car home on a failing clutch so I didn't get to do much testing of the trans, and I foolishly dove into dismantling without testing things on the parts car so.. Is there a way to determine the condition of a manual trans 'as removed'? It seems to shift smoothly, the input shaft is straight, it has a 'bearings and gears' kind of sound when you rotate the output flange.. my gut instinct is that it's in great shape. My only experience at a transmission shop was 'here's the blindfold..we're removing a thousand dollars from your wallet now'.. so I'd like to expand my DIY knowledge on this front for sure. Thx.

Well, if you reeeeeeeally want to, you can open the case up and take the trans apart, but I wouldn't recommend it. I'd just put everything back together and hope for the best.

Firstly, all 'i' motors use a crank position sensor on the front of the crank, all 'eta' motors (super-eta may be an exception) use the 2 reference sensors mounted in the trans bellhousing.

Also, don't try pulling the transmission apart. Most of the shops in this area won't even try to dig into one because you can pick one up at a salvage yard anytime for $300 or $400.

There are a couple of issues using an '86 325e manual transmission in an '89 325i car.

Identify which trans you have early 'eta', late 'eta', or 'i':

a) early 'eta' trans (1983, 1984, 1985 manufacture dates?)
i) 260.0.1270.90 is on the side of the 'eta' trans
ii) shifter mounting about the output flange is only 2xM10 holes for the 84,85,86 style plate mount shifter
iii) deep bellhousing : Slave cylinder mounting flange = 6 7/8
iv) 2 drilled holes for crank position sensors
v) smaller output flange

b) late 'eta' trans (1986, 1987, 1988 manufacture dates?)
i) 260.0.1270.90 is on the side of the 'eta' trans
ii) shifter mounting about the output flange has 2xM10 holes for the 84,85,86 style plate mount shifter, AND top boss for the aluminum bracket of the 87-91 style shifting mechanism.
iii) shallow bellhousing : Slave cylinder mounting flange = 6 1/2
iv) cast boss for 2 drilled holes for crank position sensors, may or may not be drilled
v) larger output flange

c) 'i' trans
i) 260.0.1346.90 is on the side of the 'i' trans
ii) top boss for the aluminum bracket of the 87-91 style shifting mechanism.
iii) shallow bellhousing : Slave cylinder mounting flange = 6 1/2
iv) no cast boss in bellhousing for reference sensors
v) smaller output flange

If you find your 'eta' 260 trans has the deeper bellhousing, you can correct for it by using a thicker throw-out bearing.
Sachs P/N 21511204525 is a 30mm bearing and will make up the difference.

If you use the driveshaft/guibo that came with the transmission you'll be fine, the differential end of the driveshaft is the same on all the 6cyl E30s.

All 3 versions have the same gear ratios:
1 3.83
2 2.2
3 1.4
4 1
5 0.81

Thanks for the input Dale.. that's exactly the in-depth info I was looking for. From what you listed it sounds like I have a later eta trans.. I'll have to check when I get home. So it can fit in an i.. but I'm sort of assuming the gearing is slightly different? What would be different? This is my curiousity only.. the trans in my 325i is gonna stay where it is (hopefully for a very long time). Thanks

Wow informative post Dale!

Also I believe that all the transmissions had the same gearing, the final drive (differential) is where the change was made.

Like people had mentioned, dont pull the 260 apart as its not worth it. The only thing that really goes bad on these besides a catastrophic failure is the input bearing gets noisy and loose. There isnt a remedy for this you just gotta deal with it. Few shops rebuild the 260 as well.

The ratios in all the BMW 260s are the same. I believe a few other manufacturers used the Getrag 260 and those may have different gear ratios.

Some pictures of a 'late eta' getrag 260:

http://www.unofficialbmw.com/getrag_260/images/

see the date stamp in the bellhousing in this pic, and also the slave cylinder mounting point to measure bellhousing depth:

this clearly shows both early and late shift lever mounting styles, this has the later style shifter support installed:

this shows the part number and sensor mounting points on the bellhousing:

Now here is some _real_ Getrag 260 trivia, Cadillac is using it in the 2003-2005 CTS 3.2L V6 .
If you find one of those with a 5speed, it is a Getrag 260.
I suspect the bellhousing is different...

I thought there was different ratios in the 260 lineup because I see some people on ebay selling dogleg trannies. What is a dogleg Getrag 260?

In a dogleg trans, the shift pattern looks like this:

R 2 5
[___][___]
[ ][ ]
1 3 4

This basically brings the mostly used gears into easy postions to get to.

There is a dogleg 265 trans that came in Euro M3s, and it has closer ratios then the 260.

Found an article on rebuilding a Getrag 265 (E30 M3, E28, E23, etc), doesn't look that bad as long as you have a 30ton press for a few of the parts:
http://www.totalbmwmag.com/HandsOn/TechOct03.PDF

And another one onthe 265:
http://www.pbase.com/victorhall/trans_rebuild

The 2002 came with a Getrag 232, here is a rebuild article on that

Rebuild info for Getrag 280
