Portland 9/26/2004, ICSCC Race #11, Cascade Sports Car Club

Damn! What a weekend! GregM, Peter, Bill, Tom(s), Ted(s), and Dale raced
in Pro3 this weekend. BruceF joined the DCR pit area, but as his car isn't
Pro3 ready yet, ran another class in Group1.

As I researched corner balancing last week, I found that using corner
balancing, you can setup a car for a right hand track or a left hand
track. I've always done well at the left hand tracks on our circuit,
but not as well at Portland, the only right hand track(important corners
are right handers) we race on.

First thing in practice Saturday morning, I noticed the car felt more
neutral and much better balanced, and I knew then it would be a fun
weekend.

Saturday, I took fastest qualifying with a 1.34.1 time. Ted turned a slightly
higher time. A little while later I noticed Ted&crew bolting up new
tires and brake pads, "oh yeah, those were crap pads on there and 3
year old tires". Uh oh, I'm thinking.

Sunday morning, I used my HotLap timer in qualifying, and I was very
excited to see a slightly better time of 1.33.7. When qualifying
times came out, Ted had beat me with a 1.33.4, and took pole position!
I think this is the first time this year, I haven't won pole position.

While waiting for the race to start, I focussed on just relaxing,
conserving energy, drinking energy drinks, getting ready for the race.

At the start of the race, Ted had a good start, but I did also, and
caught up to him by the entry to the chicane. PaulF was renting a
SportBMW, and very politely let us by so he wouldn't interfere with
our race. Ted and I were right behind MikeB(Lizard E36). We were
very closely matched, Ted would pull away a little in the straights,
I'd catch him a on braking and in the corner. Ted got past MikeB,
and we ran in that order for a few laps. Mike left the door open
for me slightly at Turn 7 and I slipped underneath and started looking
for Ted.
I chased him for a few more laps, not quite getting close enough to
get underneath, but at the chicane I was able to out-brake him and
tuck underneath. 3 or 4 more laps to go, I have to get well ahead
of him or he'll catch me on the straights. I was fortunate in that
we ran into some traffic, and I was able to get by them quickly, and
Ted would be slowed by them more then I would.

I finished 1st, Ted 2nd, Bill 3rd, GregM 4th. Peter dropped out
with an Accusump problem causing his oil light to come on.

4 days till Seattle and the season finale!

PS Roadstergal was a huge help this weekend in ensuring my car was ready
and taking pictures of everything at the track. I'm sure they will
be posted soon. Ted checked lap times after the race, and my fastest time in the
race was a 1.33.1, probably a new lap record for Pro3 at Portland!!

When I have Sunday pictures up later, they'll be at:

Sunday was an utter hoot to watch! There were a couple of pairs of well-matched drivers duking it out, Ted and Dale among them. I wish I had gotten a picture of Bruce waaaging... catching... waaaging... catching... waaaging... ohhellspin, but I hear there's video.

Most fun I've had in a weekend in a long time. Except for the sleeping on the motorhome couch part.
