I was 16 and was driving my Dad's beautiful 1963 Thunderbird (390, auto, power freakin' everything!) on a 6-mile stretch of four-lane outside Delta, Colorado. It was about 11pm. You could see the drive-in movie theater screen at the end of the road and watch the movie for six miles! Anyway, I was alone and heading home when I thought "hey, why not?!" and opened her up! The fresh 390 roared to life as I got to 100+ a hell of a lot faster than I expected! That movie screen is getting a lot closer a lot faster! I wisely backed off and had the biggest grin while doing so!

My fastest in anything was as a passenger in a new '90 BMW 528 in Germany. My German boss was driving and I saw the speedometer reach 290 km/h (175 mph)! In Autobahn traffic in the rocket lane, that is still too ^@%$!# fast! Desert roads, OK. German (or US) highway, no!

I've never had my E30 over 100.

I topped out my former ('90 1.6L) Miata one morning... very, very, very early one morning... to see how fast it would go. 120, FWIW.

Jesh...so many cars...each one I probably had my foot through the radiator.

72 Galaxy with a 351 Cleveland Big block was a highway rocket.
Had a 240Z saw over that more than a few times. Ah, the young and foolish.

Mostly, Bikes were the ticket for pushing the envelope.
Working at a dealer in my 20's, got to "test" all the lastest and greatest out there.

Saw 140 on the VFR last summer. Test reports claim 150. Havent seen that yet and I don't plan on doing that too often. Things are moving past pretty quick and you come up on cars very quickly.

Generally getting a little slower (or wiser) as years go by. Depends on you prerspective.

Sure can beat the rush though.

Well I topped my 94 530i out at 147 mph on I-5 in CALI. It was about 2 in the morning. So i decided why not. I then backed off and took the nearest exit. TO my surprise a State trooper pasted the same exit going at least 120. HUM!! Who was he looking for!! I just got lucky!! But yet that still doesn't beat 183 mph in my 1970 plymouth cuda. But maybe I will own a BMW one day that can do it.

scpmarine: just out of curiousity, what was that 'cuda packing? 383, 440, or the all mighty 426 HEMI?

i've piloted my bimmer to 110, my neighbor's 87 ferrari 328 GTS to 100 (on a sweeping right hander too ) and my dad's 99 subie outback wagon to 102.

My first time over 100 was in a 62 Studebaker 2 door lark that no one, including myself, thought it would do it. I was 16 in 1986 and passed a buddys 66 mustang with a 289 that had run out of go. After I got back into town, I had to put 3 quarts of oil in it.

But the best was probably when I got popped by the Florida Highway Patrol on I-4 while driving my beloved 73 240z. 4 was undergoing its first line of rebuilding, and I, being a bright 17 year old, thought it would be cool to take the new not competed exit. I was running down I-4 doin about 120, I had come up over a hill, slowed down to about 110 when I apparently passed one of the fine troop members hiding in his LTD II (little dinky POS based on the old ford fairmont for those of you that are to young) When he got me, as I was trying to dismount the interstate at this new exit, I thought he had gotten me for leaving the road there, I did not realize until I saw the smoke coming from under the hood of the LTD that he had been chasing me for some time and had just finally gotten close enough to turn on the beacons.. That was a rather Hefty ticket and my Dad, the Deputy, was just a little unamused, when the trooper, who had known my dad for some time, called him the next day to let him know I was the reason he was getting a new car because he blew the motor chasing me..

1983 Mazda RX-7: B12 Wankel Rotary engine; Driving from Indiana back to Chicago; Had a passenger with me; Odo says 85MPH (max) but I buried it; Camaro kept up with me; we pulled over and he noted that we hit 108mph.

1987 Nissan Sentra: 4-banger SOHC engine; Didn't hit 100mph but it did hit 90mph - and I was amazed that it hit that speed.

1987 Nissan Maxima: V6 engine (same as 300Z); Down I35W from Texas Motor Speedway to 820; Open road and radar turned on; 110mph

1990 Mazda Miata: 4-banger (Package B- for those who 'know'); Down I55 from Joliet to Chicago; Open road; 118mph; She was screaming.

1995 Mercedes C280: V6 engine; Down I35W from Texas Motor Speedway to 820; Open road and radar turned on; 105mph; She had more to 'give' but it was my wife's car.

1987 BMW E30 325: Inline-6 engine (Performance chipped); Going south on I35W from Texas Motor Speedway to 820 (again); It's a great open road; Radar turned on; Southern winds @ 10-15mph; 124mph;

1999 Mercedes ML430: V8 engine (same as S430, SL430, and E430); Driving I10 from Lake City to Pensacola, FL; A burgundy-colored Caddy was drafting me and wouldn't take turns being the 'lead'. So, I gunned it to 105mph; To bad the "governor" was ON; Governor = wife; she was screaming at me to "slow down, slow down". That V8 engine wasn't even at full capacity but I knew we had another 800 miles to get home. So I did not want to push the engine too hard.

... and now the E30 M3... 4-banger M-power... I have yet to even try to see just how fast she'll go....

Has anyone (who owns one) tried ?

JRS

Well i guess you just have to *overclock* your E30 a bit there...

The first time I hit 100+mph I was grinning for ear to ear. this beast really thrives at the higher RPMs. (above 3500k in my case) Mine's a 325i tho.

Gawd, I am soooo embarassed... fixed! I was trying to remember which car did 100+mph.

The 95 Nautica Villager, 97 Dodge Neon, 85 Volvo 240DL, 86 Wolfsburg Rabbit VW, and 84 (Regular) Rabbit VW - - all failed to hit 100+mph.

I got a mightily impressive indicated 94 mph out of my first car, a ford fiesta 1100cc, on a bumpy country road, hopping and skipping all over the place - no fear when you're 17 and just passed your test...

First car up to over 100 was the subsequent ford orion 1600cc, 105 indicated for a few brief seconds, i was older and wiser then... the ripe old age of 18 lol

ah, those were the days
