2001 X5 purchased as certified pre-owned with 40K miles. At 44 K miles yellow light indicates oil level low. Go to add oil and observe rust color on underside of fill cap and inside oil fill port. Never looked in there before. Reported observation to dealer and showed it to them. They say rust color I see is normal for BMW oil and that it is not rust but rather due to vapors from the oil. Dealer simply did an oil service job and told us not to worry. Mfg warranty expires at the end of the month. I'm concerned this is not normal and may be rust. Have other BMW owners seen this? Is this normal???

Do others find they have to add oil in between oil service visits?

Any advice would be appreciated.

What is your typical commute trip? If less than 5 miles or so, you are not heating up the engine to burn off moisture.

If you do commute a long distance, and at high speed, there may very well be a problem.
