I have just bought a 1991 325i with 130,000 miles on it. The speedometer is a VDO unit and has stopped working. In America, every major metro city seems to have at least one shop which specializes in speedometer repair, including VDO units. According to the shop where I will be taking my unit to, speedometer failure is a common occurance and the repair is routine. The cost in Florida is between $210 and $250 dependent on the model. The repair time is roughly 2 hours. The instrument panel has to come out first and the speedometer removed. In case one's home is far from the shop, the repair can be handled by mail. I would imagine similar situation exists in Australia. I have no experience working through a BMW dealer. I would imagine the dealer would send their unit to these specialists. Most independent BMW service shops do. I would imagine it is not a job for amatuers. By the way, VDO makes speedometers for many European cars and some pricey American cars. |
