CARIN

In 1994, BMW and Phillips car systems were the first to introduce a standarized navigation system to the market It is called CARIN- CAR Information and Navigation System- and is currently available for all the models in the 5 and 7 series ( soon also available in the special editions of the 3 series ). GPS satellites transmit signals that allow the precise positioning of the vehicle to be determined by the road navigation system. To achieve an even more precise reading, a compass is included. In addition, the traveled distance is measured 48 times per wheel rotation with the help of ABS sensors. The data is compared to the current, exact position of the vehicle every three seconds.

It is especially user-friendly because it is controlled by one button. Once the BMW Navigation System has been "fed" the desired destination, it monitors exactly the route being driven, guiding the driver with voice instructions and dashboard graphic displays safely and precisely to the given address. On the way there, the BMW Navigation System will also indicate points of interest, including not only cultural and architectural attractions, but also hotels and restaurants worthy of a stop along the way. The system is particularly simple to use, in that it is controlled by one master dial. In addition, the on-board monitor can be used as a television set while the vehicle is stationary.
