Will,
I gather from the tone of this message that you are thinking about
non-Land rover engines but I must say I am VERY happy with the Rover
4.2 installation in my '87 Range Rover. It now has plenty of power
and accelerates like a normal car rather than the slug it was. And my
gas mileage has actually improved because I don't have to work the
engine so hard. The engine was taken out of a wrecked LWB and rebuilt
by Rimmer Engineering. It cost me $4,000 plus core for the long block
and didn't include installation. While that is significantly more
than you might have to pay for a Chevy or Ford small block V8 or V6, I
think it's more than made up for by the fact that installation was a
simple R&R. It uses all the original intake and ignition systems,
starter, etc. I'm even using the original EFI computer which is
working fine so far, although I do plan to put in a later model
computer with the 4.2 chip whenever I can get it working (my friendly
at-work electronic technician hosed something when he de-soldered the
3.9 chip and installed a plug-in socket for the 4.2 chip). Using a
Land Rover engine and all the original induction and emissions
equipment is also a BIG advantage when it comes to emissions testing
and inspection. I passed first time with plenty of margin.
