Subject: RR stuttering - problem found

Thanks for all the answers on my RR stuttering problem.(I'm sending this from my home address via web page as my work computer is down for a while.)

I checked this afternoon and the alternator light was glowing just so slightly, just as one reply suggested. I stopped by a nearby MG shop to have them check it. They did not do Rovers, but my suspicians were confirmed when the Rover failed to start. ARghh. The shop did jump me for free and at least I know the problem now. I also had the volts checked and they think the alternator was not putting out anything. Looks like its time for a new alternator. (oddly, the tach still worksany ideas why?)

So ... I think my current alt. is an 80 amp bosch (little MB type star). I've gotten $400-500 quotes from AB and BP. This is for a MM alternator which appears to have replaced the Bosch. DAP appears to have alternators much cheaper,$229, but I have yet to talk to them. Auto zone lists a $179 alternator for the RR (not OEM) but they are out. I may also look into getting it rebuilt, but would prefer a new one if the price is close. Any advice? Will a local parts shop replacement be OK? is the MM ok? can I trust a rebuild not to leave me stranded? Is there anything else I should check before I but the alternator.

TIA
William
