Last year I pulled the instrument cluster to change some light bulbs. When I reinstalled it, the OBC had changed to displaying in German and Metric. Cute for a while, it soon got old. I was unable to find how to reset the language in any of the online information.

Tonight I figured out how to change the language on my OBC.

This applies to my 1988 325is, and maybe your E30, but I don't think all E30 OBCs are identical.

  1. Key in position 1 (obc lights up, radio has power)
  2. press and hold small reset button to the right of the
    "1" button
  3. press "AVG MPG" button to cycle through available options
    [ MPG | M/G | L:100 ]
MPG = miles per gallon (da), all units are American
    M/G = ??miles/gallon, all unit are American
L:100 = Liters per 100 kilometers, all units are German/Metric
  4. release small reset button, press Time/Date button to set
  5. say goodbye to "uhr"
