Subject: IDLE CONTROL UNIT REPAIR

While troubleshooting my 1986 325es & my girlfriends 1984 528e for an 800 to 2000 idle surge I came up with this. All the sensors checked OK. Before spending $100+ on each idle control unit I made up a simple fixture to eliminate the idle control unit. What I did, was to provide the idle control valve with a fixed votage via a variable 50 ohm resistor adjusted to ~ 20 ohms. Pick a voltage source for the resistor (In series) & a ground & feed these two wires to the idle control valve.

In my case the surge stopped pointing to defective idle control units. I removed both idle control units (above glove box) and reheated all soldered connections. Surge problem solved. If this dosen't work for you & your short of funds you may want to leave the test fixture in place. Technician level assumed.
