Subject: <E30> Electrical Note

My daughter's 85 318i has been having some serious electrical problems for the last two years, culminating in the need for a new battery and alternator. After replacement of these defective (tested) items, the 318i was dead after sitting for 2 days.

It took a while, but I noticed that the trunk lid was a little high when closed. Daughter Lynne had tried to adjust it and broken the locking nut, so the trunklid slowly rises in the night (and day). The contact switch on the lid itself turns on the trunk light with very little pressure, meaning that a slight high adjustment of the lid will keep the light on and run down the battery over a few days. If the 318i is used every day, there is no problem.

Solution is to either build up the area on the body where the switch hits, or extend the switch with rubber vacuum plug that fits over the switch. I did both and the car's fine. Taping the nut with duct tape seems to hold it in place for a few months. Total cost of fix: 10 cents.
