Subject: <86 and older E30> Roadster lever's a no-no
KC and all of you with older E30's that have the sheet-metal console,
If you're planning on installing an M Roadster shifter lever in your E30
for that ultimate short-shift, either cancel your order and buy an E36
M3 lever, or send the lever to Ben and have him send you an E36 M3 lever.
The Roadster lever is too short and will cause the shift rod under the car
to rub against the metal housing around your guibo, if it even fits. The
E36 M3 lever is about as short as you can get, and may require some
modification to clear this housing, such as bending the shift rod a
little.
Ben and I (by far mostly Ben) installed an E36 M3 lever in my 1986 325es
with the sheet-metal console yesterday, using the original cup and spring
assembly, which also have to be modified a bit, destroying the old lever
in the process (email me for more info about this). It rubs the
aforementioned housing in second gear, so we bent the rod a little and it
quieted the noise for the most part, even though the rod needs a little
more bending because it still makes a bit of noise. But hot-damn, is it
short! We're going to modify the console mountings to get rid of all the
slop, but the lever alone will take out almost all of it.
So the bottom line is that the even-shorter Roadster lever definitely
won't fit. Get the M3 lever.
